Bearing Upgrade How To Empty Bearing Upgrade How To

Post by Mikael Sat Apr 16, 2016 10:40 am

Hi Guys,

After my 2nd bearing failure I started to replace the one that had most issues.
Here is my guide.
The bearing I used was a F605ZZ, 5x14x5.
Here is the STL file, make sure to print it with 100% fill. Holes for the screw and hole for the bearing need some work after print.

The top right bearing is the one that has the full load of both the stepper and the rest of the axis. This bearing is far too small and has failed on me 2 times now.
It looks like this, but with 4 plastic bushings instead of 3 as the image has.
3 bushings + the bearing is 5mm.

This is what I have replaced it with, as you can see I have printed supports for it.
[img(500px,375px)]http://www.combomakers.com/images/bearing2.jpg [/img]

Started off with drilling out a 14mm hole in several small steps to make sure the hole was centered.

After the holes are drilled properly then I start with the assembly.

Started with attaching the bearing to the frame with the shortest spare screws, nuts and shims provided. As you can see I was forced to smooth it off on the inside (scrape marks) to make sure the bearing fit properly.

This is how it looks on the outside.

Next is just to put everything back and we have now upgraded the bearing with 4x the durability.

Cool stuff and great upgrade, Mikael Smile.
Can you also attach the project file for the bearing housing? It's gonna save some time for anyone doing the upgrade.
What exact bearing model have you used? Is it 5 x 16 x 5mm?

I'm thinking of getting bigger bearing as well, though the current ones have not failed me yet, but I'm sure this is gonna happen sooner or later.

Seems like the link for the STL is broken now, can you upload a new one, Mikael?

I need to finally get on with the upgrade, as the bearings start to play with me.

Thanks, got it Smile.
I've also modified your design to get 5x11x5 bearings to fit, as the 14 hasn't arrived yet :/.

11mm is better then the original ones in any case. As long as you have the flange since they will wonder out without it.
Have you mounted them?

Unfortunately no bearings with flange, the 11mm I have ordered were meant for supporting Y-axis, so it does not bend so much when it works.

But the modified holders should compensate for that, as I've made the nest for bearings, so they cannot escape one way. The whole thing looks like this:

I still need to polish them a bit and make more space around moving part of the bearing, so there is no friction there.

Ohh, and I haven't mounted them yet, need to drill holes for bearings tomorrow.
