Perfection Questions Empty Perfection Questions

Post by slackmaniac Fri Apr 22, 2016 3:23 am

I'm just wondering if anyone 3D printing with the Formaker has found an optimal temperature for printing with the PLA. Also is it worth using the heating bed for PLA, I know ABS needs it, but I'm curious about PLA. I apologize, I'm still fairly new to the whole 3D printing technology. Sad

PLA works best for me at 215C and 70mm/s print speed.
But I have added better cooling for the extruder, this helped a lot with the quality.

PLA works without heated bed, but I would not risk it, it might warp badly.
I always run the bed on at 80C.

If you add raft to the print, then you can print without heated bed and there'll be no warping - at least that my experience with Formaker.

@Mikael, can you share your cooling upgrade in Hardware section? I'm thinking of adding additional fans to the extruder and I'm really curious how you modified it yourself.

What I did was work with the existing parts, basically just increase the cooling capacity with thermal paste.
I wrote a guide with images in the hardware section already.

Does adding thermal paste really have significant effect on cooling? I'm asking, because I've considered adding thermal paste last time I was adjusting nozzles.

Well, thats hard to answer since there is no sensor on the thermal barrier tube.
What I have seen is that the heat up time has increased and that tells me that it is working.

I've added it myself after last nozzle adjustment and there should be some improvement, at least it won't hurt.

Next thing I'm planning to add is additional cooler for nozzles:

Though this possibly requires some soldering on motherboard, if CTC didn't leave spare mosfet 24V fan.

Do not test that one.
It is far too thick to fit, I already tested it.

One more upgrade I might do is one of the following.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micro-Swiss-MK10-All-Metal-Hotend-Kit-/222049005717?hash=item33b326f095:g:3PIAAOSwoBtW4W8a

Now that I see the price of that E3D V6 im buying 2, long distance.
I am going to move the steppers to the rear of the printer.

Good you've warned me before I've printed it :p.

What upgrading with E3D V3 changes in compare to the standard ones?

E3d V6 is all metal.
With an all metal hot end you can print PET, Nylon etc. All materials that require past 240C.
Standard hot end starts to melatonin 240C and will not hold for long printing anything except ABS or PLA.

Thanks for explaining, so I might as well order a couple for myself right now. Got some NinjaFlex recently, so this could surely help to print with it.

A bit out of temperature scope, but in upgrading realm, I've thought to replace linear bearings on carriage and get those:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Igus-Drylin-RJ4JP-01-08-X4-CUT-17MM-LONG-for-CTC-Flashforge-Makerbot-Createbot-/301942751336?hash=item464d30c068:g:9A8AAOSwn1RXIlDy

I've looked up some info about noise with CTC and this came up in addition:
https://www.3dhubs.com/talk/thread/igus-bearing-swap-guide-ctc-flashforge-makerbots

Seems like they are nice and quiet for 3D printing, but I'm not sure if they could handle CNC.

Hi Szalap,
I would not use friction bearings if I was you.
The torque from the CNC will destroy them easy.
