Bearing Failure
Hi,
Reporting a bearing failure.
It's the bearing above the Y axis stepper motor that supports the shaft that transfers the motion to the left side. See attached image, much easier to understand.
Anyway, I have advised CTC and will let all know what their response is. I believe the bearing to be simply too small for the loads imposed.

Re: Bearing Failure
Hi.
The original bearings are MF85ZZ. I suggest buying some ready for when your bearing fails.
5pcs on Aliexpress is about $5.50AUD.
I am working on a mod to use F605ZZ bearings. They can accept a load over 4x the original bearing.
I will keep you informed.

Re: Bearing Failure
Ordered new bearings and new linear ones and F605ZZ.
Lets see if I need them.

Re: Bearing Failure
I ordered the F605z yesterday. I have drawn some mounts but will only be able to test the mounts once the bearings arrive. Hopefully they don't take too long from China. Once everything is setup correctly I will post the mounts and instructions on thingiverse and here. Note that I am designing a mod that uses a total of 8x F605zz bearings. This should eliminate the flex in the 5mm shafts.

Re: Bearing Failure
From what material are you planning on making the mounts?

Re: Bearing Failure
Hi, ABS with 100% fill. I have made a few test pieces successfully, but without the bearings I cannot assemble it. I am offering a solution, not the best solution. I hope this fixes my machine and helps others too. My fix should eliminate the 5mm rod flex as well. It will not be simple fix but it should be effective one.

Re: Bearing Failure
I have access to a machine shop that could make the mounts from aluminium or steel.
I am a bit worried that the plastic will shatter or deform if anyone tries to mill anything harder then wood. Vibrations are especially worriying for plasitc structural parts without fiberglass reinforcement.

Re: Bearing Failure
I understand. I replaced the failed bearing and 3d printed the parts. Even though there is flex in plastic, there will be far less shaft flex if supported well by two bearing blocks per belt (4 in total per shaft) even if they are plastic.. I feel that it's also preferable for owners to print their solutions. At the moment I measured over 1.5mm of cross shaft flex (at the centre of the shaft) when the belts were tensioned. I don't thing a single bearing at the centre is enough. A 5mm shaft is very flexible. Once I have my test finished I will pass on what I learn and hopefully it's mostly good. It will take over a week for the bearings to ship out. I wait patiently.

Re: Bearing Failure
Got all my bearings.
Will start mountain the Z axis ones now since the solution of adding lube didnt last long.

Re: Bearing Failure
Now I had the same bearing fail.
I have designed a new holder and am going to make a guide for upgrading to the larger F605Z.
It will require a 14mm hole drilled centered in the originals and 2 2mm holes next to it for screwing the new holder in place.
Going to try the mod tomorrow.
